What makes you Happy?

Recently, I have been reading a book by a Harvard professor Dan Gilbert– the book is called
Stumbling on Happiness.

He explains when asked what makes people happy they typically don’t answer correctly.

There are 3 traps that we fall into, unwittingly making yourself unhappy.

1– Postponing happiness.  The when I (fill in the blank), I will be happy syndrome. Happiness isn’t something we can acquire in the future.  You are either happy now or not; because “then” never gets here.

I loved his quote: “NOW is the only time you have to be happy. If you can’t be happy now, you most certainly wont be happy later.”

2– Spending our lives hoping to make others happy.  We all know that other people can’t make us happy why do we think WE can make others happy?

3– The last happiness trap we fall into is contrast. Typically people judge their happiness by the illusion of what they think gives others happiness. We only know how to judge something by comparing it to something else or others.

Prof. Gilbert believes that bottom line happiness creates. It is not derived from the outside; it is only derived from within. It’s a state of mind that we choose.

I am firm believer that no matter our circumstance there is always something to be grateful for.

Having an attitude for Gratitude is my goal.  Of course my camera assists me and often I am able to savor the moment and revisit.

This time of season when people ask me what my New Years Resolutions are– I simply reply that my goal is to live in the moment. Find the joy, the passion and contentment in my life this moment and enjoy my Happiness.

What makes you happy?

I would love for you to share…

As always — visit Beverly at Pink Saturday.

And… Mary at Little Red house on Monday.

May you ring in the near year with joy and happiness!  🙂

See you next year!  (I love saying that!)

I loved your post as I truly believe one is totally responsible for their own happiness by appreciating the simple, beautiful, and gentler things in life. Not that there are not outside influences or circumstances that weigh in on us at times, but just generally having a positive outlook and yes, living and appreciating the moments and people in life that are truly meaningful. Happy New Year and Happy Pink Saturday!

    Dearest Claudia,
It is always a joy to meet new people that either come to me, or that I discover myself. Thank you for leaving a comment on my BLUE POST….no, unfortunately, I did not take all of those pictures in the header. Those are all from TUMBLR! But blue is a happy color, and how ironic that you should be posting on happiness. I do believe that HAPPINESS comes from within us, that eternal JOYOMETER that God has given us Himself, but that we need to cultivate. Love is the only answer for our doubts and grumpy moments….your prof was right…
I wish you a most happy 2011 and I REALLY DO HOPE that our paths cross this year! Anita

  19. Karen Cox says:

First I want to say Happy New Year!  I totally agree with those points.  I think I came to terms with lots of  impressions on this subject when I turned 50.  I read a great book by Kim McMillan.  That was the  year that I discovered the only person I can truly make happy is myself.  Being grateful is key, and acceptance is another biggy.  Accepting people around us as they are and accepting our strengths and weaknesses.  The most important thing is to live in the moment and literally take one day at a time.  It’s always great to have a positive inner voice, which gives no room for worry anxiety or anything unpleasant.  Having faith in God and knowing that He loves us is the happiest medicine of all!
Wishing you the best New Year ever!
